What in the world is a Pell Grant?

Quite simply, a Pell Grant is one of the college grants that is given to students that are able to show a need for financial aid, or help.

So, what is the difference between a “grant” and a “scholarship?”

Think of it like this…

A scholarship is given out on the basis of some merit. In other words, normally, you earn a scholarship. You might earn it by excelling in some sport, or academics.

A grant however is never “earned.” It is a government grant (unlike a loan, you never need to pay it back) to students who are able to show that they “need” help.

The Pell Grant was named after the senator (Senator Pell) who saw such a need and urged other senators to create the grant.

How do you know if you qualify for a Pell Grant?
